Whats Coming…

What is coming? Well, first off, once LayeredPanel v2 is released (Which will be very soon!) we will move to a better server, dedicated hosting, so we will be faster. Now also, obviously LayeredPanel v2 will be installed! LayeredPanel v2 is full of features, which will be great as we will have a lot more features then before.

Now this comes at a price. LayeredPanel v2’s core has been nearly 100% overhauled, thus it will be nearly impossible to migrate user’s from v1 to v2. So all accounts will need to be re-registered. We will alert everyone before this is going to happen so you can backup and be ready! So please be on your toes for this email!

What Happened?

Sorry about this coming quite late, But you may be wondering what happened to us a few days ago.

Well, we encountered some server troubles, we are not sure if it was an abuser or technical. But we tried to find it all, but the issue had gotten out of control, the server had crashed, we got it all back up and running though. We also found out a LP isssue, it had some issues of its own, but it has all been fixed.

We are sorry for this inconvience but we hope that this won’t happen of this magnitude again.

Why choose Fate Host over those OTHER Hosts

Why should you choose Fate Host over those OTHER hosts? Quite simple… We have brains. Now let me explain, most other free hosts don’t think before they act. (Some do, but I won’t say :P) Now as said, quite a few hosts don’t think about the decisions they make before preceeding. They don’t think about there user’s. Yes I know they may not know how they will act till they do it. But that’s what ASKING is for… Ask your user’s before preceeding, now of course, you should ask once you have put your decision in place.

Okay, now that I have gone off subject again… Why choose Fate Host? Sure we may not have those fancy pants features like those other hosts have, we may not have 2GB Disk Space, 100GB+ Transfer, cPanel and what not, but we have something they may not. Wise decision making and experience. Although I am not a server know it all, but I know how to get around, but I know what it is like to use a free host. I used free hosts, quite a few too. Hopped from one to another… Till I found the best one possibly ever created! So I know what it is like, always worrying if the host will be good, will be able to support itself, will be there the next morning (Didn’t worry with my last host. I have 100% trust in them) so I can always put myself in your shoes. I understand how a free host works and operates, what it needs to survive. How it should expand, what it should or shouldn’t do. We will (Us, Fate Host) never take on anything greater then we can handle. We will always think our decisions out, ask for your opinions, allow you to have a voice in what we do, what our future is.

I can’t make you trust Fate Host, but I can sure try. I hope this gave you hope in us, for you to use us for your new free host. So c’mon! Give us a chance! We won’t let you down. :)

cPanel or LayeredPanel

Okay, I have to be honest, I haven’t posted on this blog in awhile. So I have decided to talk about cPanel or LayeredPanel (Which we use). Which is better for a free host?

Originally Fate Host was going to use cPanel. It was what Trent had got along with the server in the first place. We were a bit confused on how to use WHM in the first place, but we started to get the hang of it. But then later I thought why don’t we try using LayeredPanel? Its Simple, Fast efficient and great for free web hosts. So a few weeks later he purchased LayeredPanel and a server for it and we set it up. Well I don’t have to go into much details there.

But which is better? I guess that all depends… If the host is going to go feature crazy, then cPanel is the way to go. As you can have subdomains, a lot of addon domains and so on and so forth. But with LayeredPanel you can’t offer subdomains (Except for 1, the one you get when you signup) and only 1 addon domain. Which I think is fine, as its a free host. If you want a feature rich host that will be RELIABLE then you need to go paid.

Sorry for my babbling. This probably won’t come to any use of any of our free host user’s but maybe it will give them an insight of why we use it and maybe it will help some other person on the verge of making there own free host.

A few things

A few things have been done to Fate Host. One thing is I have made the Application installer a bit more user friendly, its more detailed, and tells you what to do in the input box. Also as you may notice next to each application it says what it is (CMS, Forum, Gallery etc). If you think one is wrong, or what one should say, please tell us, by submitting a support ticket.

Also, a new MySQL Manager has been put up. MySQL Quick Admin, there is a link on the user index as you login. phpMyAdmin is still there though, but now you have a few options, phpMyAdmin, phpMiniAdmin and of course MySQL Quick Admin. So enjoy! :)

In other news, We are currently at this time hosting 150 sites! Spread the word and help us grow. And remember, our Double the Space Offer lasts for 4 more days! So hurry in!

Double the Space!

Until the 14th of Feb. we are offering double the space, in order to get this, you will have a bigger banner placed in the footer of your site. If you would like to have 600MB Space, please send in a ticket and we will get you upgraded ASAP. Thanks :)

New Layout!

I am glad to now have a template made JUST for Fate Host up and working. I know there is 1 page (what you get) that isn’t in the new template, which I will get to soon, so other then that, I have tested it in Firefox and IE7, Opera, Safari and so on and basically it all works except a little bug… (Powered by in Safari, and Opera go off to the side) which I am trying to fix. If there are any error’s please tell.

Which should I choose? phpBB or SMF?

When it comes to forums, (free forums) people think of features. The most popular ones are probably phpBB and SMF. Now I know there is more, but this post is about phpBB and SMF. Which is better?

Well, that’s all in your opinion. phpBB is a simple forum, SMF isn’t hard but it is very nice and feature packed. Lets go over a few key features. A Big one is spam protection, so lets go over that, phpBB has horrible spam protection, many people refer to phpBB as a spam magnet. I had a phpBB forum once, not many people went to it because it was like a backup forum. It was a spam magnet, I don’t know how phpBB manages to allow such a thing, but they do. But that is phpBB2, now I can’t really say a whole lot about phpBB3 as I haven’t much used it. Now lets go over SMF, SMF is well, A lot less prone to spam. I don’t know how they do it. It doesn’t seem as they do much different then they do phpBB, although I can see a difference between phpBB’s and SMF’s CAPTCHA although bots still can’t read it.

Now Permissions and Groups. How about what are they…? Well Permissions are self explanitory. You can setup who is and isn’t allowed to do or have access to some specified place, board, post, feature or whatever it may be. Then there are Groups, referred to as Member Groups. You put members in groups and you can assign that certain group once again permissions. Such as making someone a moderator, you allow them to take care of a board or forum, Global Moderators are sort of like that but they can do it on every single board post and so on on that forum. Then there are administrators. They can change settings on the forum, and pretty much anything else and more. Now of course you can make member groups of your own, assigning each one certain permissions.

Okay, now that I have explained it, lets go over how SMF and phpBB handles it. Now SMF’s Permissions are straight forward, you simply go into the Admin Center, go into Permissions, hit Modify next to the Member Group you would like to modify Permissions for and simply check and uncheck a certain permission and hit save and its done! Now phpBB, to this VERY day, I have not been able to figure out permissions. They are so complicated, I have only found out how to setup permissions per individual person. It is HORRIBLE!I mean its as if phpBB strives to make there forums so hard and complicated to use. Now before you get all angry, this is just my thoughts, you can go ahead and think all you want about how “great” phpBB is but that is your opinion.

Now features! One of the other if not the biggest thing everyone wants is features. Now Im not talking about mods, as those can be added yourself. I am talking right out of the box features there you don’t have to make a second thought about. Now phpBB is horribly lacking, there user managment is poor, permissions are poor (Of course its a feature :P) there is no way to upload themes within the admin center, you cannot upload mods through the admin center, nothing fancy it is a very simple forum. SMF is a different story. It is feature packed! You can upload and install themes through the Admin Center, you can upload apply, unapply delete mods in the admin center, optimize your database, have it auto optimize, download a backup (Yes phpBB does this, forgot to mention, phpBB can also backup a forum if you upload an SQL File) forum maintenance, its nothing like phpBB. In order to get phpBB to do a fraction of what SMF does you would need to apply so many mods, with SMF its already there, yes of course you can apply mods easily to your SMF forum to suit your style.

So in my opinion, SMF is the way to go! phpBB is not, unless you want a simple forum, phpBB would be good for you, but if you want a decent forum you will just love, SMF is great! I forgot to mention! SMF has something most other forums don’t have! Cool pre made SSI, you can intergrate your site with your forum in so many ways. I will talk more about that at a later time ;)

Whats PHP Mail (Sendmail) and do I need it?

What is PHP Mail, otherwise referred to as sendmail, and do I need it?

Okay, we will start with what is sendmail, It basically in laymens terms allows you to send out emails to who you specify, it is used by scripts such as forums, CMS’s and so on for validation or contacting your users. But do you need it?

Do you truly need Sendmail? No you don’t really need it but it is a good thing to have, you can have it enabled on our service for 40 forum posts. We would like to give it for free, but the thing is, in free hosting services, a lot of people target free hosts by using scripts to spam people. We want to prevent this as much as possible. Hope this helped ;)

Web Design and FTP Clients

Some people may not be as good at web designing as others. So some may use things such as templates, or WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Editors. So I have found a few free template sites and some WYSIWYG Editors, and a few other apps too.

For WYSIWYG Editors I found KompoZer. Its of course free and requires no installation whatso ever! Just download, unzip and start designing. Here is a small list of features:

  • FTP Site Manager
  • Tabs, Switch from one screen to another with Ease!
  • Customizable toolbars
  • Spell Checker
  • And More! Full List Here.

Now yes WYSIWYG Editors are very nice, making design easy. But sometimes (But Not always) these editors complicate this coding, thus making your websites source code impossible to view, (Hard to Debug) and even make your site load super slow as there is so much unneeded coding. But you have to start somewhere. Infact I first learned some HTML from a WYSIWYG Editor. Then slowly moved away and coded it myself.

Okay, now that we have a WYSIWYG Editor covered, how about some just plain pre-made FREE templates. Here is some sites that I enjoy getting templates from:

  • ZeroWeb - I have found a lot of templates from here
  • FreeWebTemplates - I don’t much care for them, there are ads and popups everywhere, but its an okay group of templates.
  • OSWD - A lot of very nice templates.
  • OpenWebDesign - Another place I really like to get templates from, every kind here.

Now all that is covered. How about uploading it to your site? Yes there is the File Manager. Its okay, but FTP access is better. You can upload more files faster, more efficiently and you can download your files faster and more efficiently too. Now I have always used FileZilla. Its also free and even Open Source. There are 2 versions that are good. FileZilla2 & 3. But FileZilla2 is actually a lot better then 3. FileZilla3 has had a lot of features removed, although they are slowly being added back, this was due to the fact that it is now cross platform compatible. FileZilla3 does not (or I can’t seem too) get it to listen to me. I have it set to only allow 1 connection per host. What does it do? It connects how ever many times it wants. FileZilla2 is different it Listens to what you tell it. Thus if your running Windows I suggest until 3 is better you get FileZilla2. Download FileZilla2 | Download Latest Version of FileZilla

I hope this helped you in some way! Enjoy.
